What is the difference between psychotherapy, counselling and coaching?

 

The length and depth of training for the practitioner is largely the main difference between counselling and psychotherapy, the latter being trained to a Masters level. Coaching is more short-term (usually up to six sessions) focusing on a specific issue.

 

 

What is psychotherapy/counselling?

 

If you are feeling overwhelmed, that the demands placed on you exceed your available resources, it may be time to reach out for extra support.  People can often feel uncomfortable about asking for therapeutic help and symptomatic of a wider individualistic society or cultural influences.  You don’t have to struggle on alone!

Do I need to bring anything with me?

 

For your initial consultation, you must bring a small amount of medical information: GP details, any current medication and any relevant medical history.

 

 

Could I bring my partner?

 

Yes, if you would like to undertake couples therapy together.

 

 

Is it confidential?

 

Yes, confidentiality is incredibly important to Indi and she will explain more about this key aspect when you meet.

 

 

Do I need to tell my Doctor?

 

Not at this point, you can discuss this in your initial consultation.

 

 

Can my Doctor refer me?

 

No, One Indi is a private service.

 

 

Do you need details of my medical history?

How long do the sessions last?

 

Fifty minute sessions held once a week for psychotherapy/counselling. Short-term work is for anything up to 15 sessions, long-term work can be up to a maximum of four years.

 

Coaching sessions are available, the sessions may differ in lenghth.  Coaching is usually up to maximum of six in total. These sessions can be spaced out in a way that meets the individual's specific needs.
