What is the difference between psychotherapy, counselling and coaching?

The length and depth of training for the practitioner is largely the main difference between counselling and psychotherapy, the latter being trained to a Masters level. Coaching is more short-term (usually up to six sessions) focusing on a specific issue, using exercises often derived from Gestalt and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) theory.

What is psychotherapy/counselling?

It can be hard for us to face the stresses and demands of life on our own.  We can feel uncomfortable about asking for help and support because our problems do not seem serious enough.  But we don’t have to struggle alone…there is another way via psychotherapy!

We can:

• Gain greater self-awareness, supported by a trained professional in a safe and confidential space.
• find a greater sense of freedom in the way we live our lives.
• discover a new way of being in the world and feel enlivened.
• make a positive investment in our future.
• gain a stronger sense of inner fulfilment.
• break the hold of habit and seek the means to change our lives.

What is Gestalt?

A holistic and relational approach to working within a therapeutic relationship, supporting the client to respond to others and the environment in a new way. Gestalt is inclusive, respecting the uniqueness of individuals and developing through experimentation.  Read More...
