I have been watching the C4 documentary "Bedlam" as I have just begun volunteering in a mental health hospital ward. If you are curious about serious mental health issues within the community and how they are managed with limited public sector resources, this is a great place to start. There is no magic solution and I am struck by how far we have come since the days of "a life sentence" of incarceration within a mental institution. I am also now more acutely aware of the benefit of having additional resources such as myself and simply being available for patients in between their episodes of psychosis. I want to encourage all counsellors to volunteer within the Mental Health arena as I think it is invaluable for them and the already-stretched NHS teams.
